A number of years ago when I was creating my web design site, I began studying the most effective ways to rank well in Google. Most people (at that time) knew to pepper the content of their site with their keywords, but I was reading in a number of places that the most effective thing to do was to secure a domain name that exactly matches your key words. This is known in SEO circles as an ‘exact match domain‘.

My business is Box 9 Design. I design, create and maintain websites in Victoria BC. So I wanted to rank for ‘Victoria Web Design’. I had long ago secured the domain box9design.ca, but that had no keywords. Following the advice I was reading on SEO Blogs like SEO Moz I looked into building my site on the domain ‘victoriawebdesign.ca’. However I then learned that the ‘bots would see that domain as all one word, which is how my website came to be located at www.victoria-web-design.ca. The dashes told the search engines that there were 3 separate words in the domain.

The results were spectacular. By having those keywords in my domain, site title, H1 tags, bold text, italics text and linked text, I was able to consistently rank in the top 5 (and often at number one) for web designers in Victoria.

Beginning in February of 2012, Google began updating their algorithm. Their goal appears to have been to ‘correct’ the ranking of sites that were using SEO ‘tricks’ like the one above. As a result my web design site plummeted into the abyss. I wasn’t that concerned as I wanted to focus more time on the SEO side of my business and designing and building websites takes up so much of my time I have none left over for research and implementation of Search Engine Marketing techniques.

By May of 2012 I thought that my exact match domain had survived the Google slaughter. I was still ranked #1 for Victoria Web Design, Web Design Victoria, and a few other related searches. However, in June came the wakeup call. Suddenly I was no longer in the top 100! Due to the reason stated above, I just let it ride, I was relieved to not have to field numerous calls and emails every week and absolutely hated to turn down business even if it was because I was too busy.

So, my SEO website The Rank Rocket is doing great. Ranking top 5 for Searches related to Search Engine Optimization in Victoria is no small feat but one that must be achieved if one is to be taken seriously by a potential client who’s looking for an expert in the field. It got me wondering what my potential clients might think if they learned that my web design site was languishing somewhere on the 14th page of results. There aren’t that many web designers in Victoria!

This provided me a great research opportunity. I decided to track my rank when I switch from my exact match domain to a domain without any keywords, box9design.ca. I started by stripping out most of the keywords on my site. I removed keywords from my url’s, titles, headings bold tags and everywhere else. My new plan is to have one key term per page and to put that key term in the h1 tag only.

Then I copied my site to the new domain and permanently redirected the old exact match domain to the new domain. Then I registered the new site with Google’s Webmaster Tools, and used a similar tool to tell Google that I had moved the site to a new domain.

Of course I have used a few more tools which for proprietary reasons will have to remain a mystery to you (you can always hire me to do the same for your site!) and wouldn’t you know it, my web design site immediately jumped from ‘not in the top 100′ sites to the #13 to #20 range in just 2 weeks!

With the popularity of social media, it is no wonder why social media marketing has become so popular and effective. If you know how to use this method properly, you will see your product, service, or business flourishing in to time. Read the following article to get valuable social media marketing information.

Regarding retweets, acknowledge them when you do them and when they are done to you. What this means is if you like what someone tweeted, use “RT” and paste in their @name and the message. This gives them credit for the content. And, if someone retweets your content, thank them. These are simple courtesies.

When using social media to market, you need to update your profile with relevant information frequently. People won’t come to your social media site if you don’t have anything new or interesting to read or see. Also be sure to communicate with your community as much as you can, but don’t overdo it either.

You can get more people to share your content by offering them something if they re-post your article or status. You could send them free samples, or feature them in your next post. You will have to find something that motivates your audience and that does not cost you too much.

Link your social media blog to Facebook for marketing success. Make it simple for fans of your blog to share posts with their friends. Include a share button at the top of your posts, and a like button at the top of your page. This will bring interest and traffic to your blog without additional work.

If you are using WordPress for your site, be sure to put a Retweet button that is at the top of your posts for your readers to use. This will make it easy for them to pass on your information to others. WordPress has plugins for this, so it will be simple for you to do with huge benefits in the long run.

Be sure that your content is interesting and unique, so that other social media users will want to share it with others. People succeed by using social media, but only if their content sticks out from others. If you are out of ideas, you can always find inspiration online or from family and friends.

To create social media content that really markets you covertly, come up with lists. Compose a list of the top fifty weird but true facts about your product, widget or niche. Top number lists seem a little boring to some, but they do tend to get quietly passed around the internet, providing a wonderful opportunity for your brand to get exposure.

The holidays may be a big time of the year, but don’t use the opportunity in the wrong way. It isn’t the best phase to test out new theories or gamble with a big risk. Stick to your proven guns and utilize them in a more customer-friendly manner. You will have all year to plan out a strategy for the next holiday season.

When it comes to social media marketing, you’re going to want to get involved in all areas that you can get your hands on. You’re going to want to get yourself involved in YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and other media outlets that can help your business reach all possible people. When you reach out to more people, your potential exposure is limitless.

Research your competitors’ social media marketing methods. This can be a great way to see what kind of methods work well, and you can also get ideas about what you don’t want to do. Don’t imitate them; use what you learn to put your own unique twist on social media marketing.

Use social medias to get in touch with your community. You should establish yourself as a professional and a trusted resource regarding issues your community is facing. If you can, involve your company in fund-raising activities. This will help you add new people to your online network and foster a good image.

To create social media content that really markets you covertly, come up with lists. Compose a list of the top fifty weird but true facts about your product, widget or niche. Top number lists seem a little boring to some, but they do tend to get quietly passed around the internet, providing a wonderful opportunity for your brand to get exposure.

Use the questions and answer feature of LinkedIn. LinkedIn’s Q&A works like a large discussion forum: look up questions related to your products or industry and write useful answers to them. You could also post a link to one of your articles if you do not have time to write something.

Having a blog is a great idea because it will help you connect with your users. Make sure that you fill it with fresh and unique content so users will not grow bored with it. It is also helpful to have a guest blogger write a post here and there to spice things up a bit.

Be sure to find other bloggers that are in your niche. Read their information regularly and make comments on what they blog about. This will allow you to be seen by them, and they may end up returning the favor for you. In addition, their readers may see the comment you make and want to visit your blog too.

Putting videos and photos on your social media pages is essential. People are very visually oriented, and even if it is just your company logo, we want to see something that we can grab a hold of and associate your company with. Its also great to include videos that showcase your product, commercials if you have them, or how-to videos.

Have a reveal tab on your Facebook page: only your friends or followers will be able to see it. Encourage people to ‘like’ your page so they can have access to this unique content. You could for instance reveal a unique coupon code to the Facebook users who have ‘liked’ your page.

Social media is an extremely vast and powerful tool. It should be something that all business owners squeeze into their marketing plans, despite their other advertising routes. It will work perfectly with any options you have already started developing and won’t require an entire rework of your core scheme. However, it is important that you follow the advice given and always focus on reaching a better future.
Search Engine Optimization: How It Can Help Your Business Grow

If you are already a webmaster, you will understand the advantages of having your website ranked well on SERPs. Following are some SEO tips that you can use to bring your website closer to the top of the search rankings.

To start off with, you need to be aware of exactly what search engine optimization is. All search engines use algorithms and keywords that determine where your site ranks. These algorithms are based on the information search engine spiders find as they crawl your site. The aim of search engine optimization is to use techniques to manipulate the data that the spiders feed into the algorithms, so that your site will be ranked highly when the algorithm computes the results to be displayed on the search engine results pages for your targeted keywords.

When your site is ranked by the search engines, a lot of factors are being considered. It looks for certain keywords that are written in your site’s content and headings. They will also look at links from and to your site and the activity which is on your site.

Increasing your position on the search engines is a process that takes time. Put a focus on making sure that your site is designed to be easy to navigate and attractive to both your visitors and the search engine bots. Start by researching keywords used by your target audience and use them in your content. Search engines use these keywords to index and rank your site. The keywords also increase your site’s relevancy to those terms.

You can not simply pay for SEO work. However, you can pay to be something called a featured or sponsored result, which is different. Unfortunately, most people do not click in these areas. The spots are usually filled by corporate companies who have large advertising budgets.

Simply finding the correct keywords isn’t all there is to search engine optimization. You can improve the chances of your site being found by linking both within and between your own pages, and by getting your site linked on external pages. A great way to obtain links is by exchanging links with other website owners.

When the demographic that you are trying to reach beings visiting your site, you will know that your targeting has been successful. Some people will randomly happen upon your site, but this is not what is going to bring you business. If you want to reach your target market, you must utilize keywords that are likely to be used when your potential customers are searching the web for services such as yours. Focus some time advertising on the type of sites that your potential customers visit.

A website is a necessity for a business today. A website is essential to finding new customers on the Internet. In this article, you will find a number of ideas to help you optimize your site to increase sales and realize success.

Well this is interesting. Google just released some new research which shows that using AdWords alongside your high ranking keywords causes huge gains in click through rates. Common sense would dictate that one use paid ads only until you reach #1 for your key terms and then drop the paid ads right? That’s what I did and I work in the industry.

I have to keep reminding myself that not everyone distinguishes the paid from the organic search results. I always prefer the organic results. Why? Because to me that signals that the company who ranks #1 organically is the leading authority on whatever it is that I’m looking for. I think most would agree if only they could tell the paid from the organic result.

There is another aspect to this phenomenon. It seems that many people see the top organic result, then the top paid ad, and in their minds equate this combination with a kind of ‘super authority’. In other words, the company that has pulled off essentially TWO top search results in one must REALLY be an authority on this subject! The study admittedly did not track conversions, only clicks, but let’s face it getting the click is half the battle. If you’re getting 20 clicks a day or more without any conversions you must redesign or reconfigure your home page in order to convert those visits into sales, appointments, emails or phone calls.

You can read more about the incrementality of ad clicks on the Google blog.

Search Engine Optimization is Changing Fast thanks to Google

Have you been hearing about Google penalizing sites that are ‘over optimized’? Today I’m going to explore what this means, who it’s affecting, and how to avoid losing your hard-won Google authority in the coming months.

A Little History

Back in the day, the link was the undisputed King when it came to helping you rank well on Google. Any link was good whether in the footer, in the content or on the sidebar. The link text didn’t really matter and neither did the theme of the website linking to you. You could trade links with other sites, link with an image – it didn’t matter as long as Google found that link back to your site.

Flash forward a few years and Google now has to try to return the best possible results knowing that there is a whole industry (the SEO industry) that has grown up trying to game the system. This isn’t to say that the system didn’t (and doesn’t) need a little gaming.

What Google wants is for everyone with a website to create great, original, compelling content on a regular basis. This will draw the attention of bloggers and others from all over the internet brining links, social bookmarks, facebook likes, g+’s and more. This is all well and good if you are a blogger. But what if you have a one or two man shop in a small town and don’t have the time or inclination to spend half your day writing about furniture, or skin care or whatever else you’re selling.

Enter the SEO ‘expert’. Your seo guy would research the best keywords and key terms to use and then pepper your website with those terms over and over again. Get them in your web address, your page title, all the headings, bold text, italics, lists, links and more. Put them EVERYWHERE!. Then, go out and create hundreds of links without regard for where they’re being created and with the exact keyword text links every time.

Of course, while this worked (for a time) it did not look natural to Google and they began the long and ongoing process of adjusting their algorithm to nullify link swaps, penalize for having too much matching anchor text etc.

Beginning last year ‘content farms’ like ezinearticles.com were completely de-indexed. Ouch. These were places where one could submit an article (maybe like the one I’m writing now) and include a few links within the text. Eventually, that’s pretty much all you could find on these sites is crappy content whose only purpose was to link back to someone’s website (or most often an affiliate marketer’s website).

Where We’re Going From Here

Google continues to de-index ‘private blog networks’. The good pbn’s are locking down their networks and refusing to share url’s of articles published. While this is a good thing from a security standpoint, it frustrates clients who would like to see exactly where their links are being placed. This is causing SEO clients to trust their SEO professionals to a level never experienced before.

It’s also causing Google to put less emphasis on back links than ever before. A 2009 survey of the Google algorithm showed that linking factors accounted for 55% of the algorithm. The same survey in 2011 put the same factor at 40%. The big question is where did that 15% go?

It’s a safe bet that at least some of that ranking factor has shifted to social signals. Some weight will be given to Facebook likes, tweets, g+’s and the like, but these factors will never replace the power of a direct link to your content.

Verified Authorship

So, why exactly did Google roll out the + program? There are likely way more reasons than we know today, but the main one that is emerging at the moment is a way to verify the author of a link, and to give more weight in the algorithm to that link. So, getting a link from a highly authoritative site like, say, CNN.com is great. But getting that same link from a verified g+ user at CNN.com is exponentially better.

There’s a lot of in-depth information about the idea of verified authorship in Tom Anthony’s article on SEOMoz.

Knowing this information, it’s hard to believe that Google will not be giving more link ‘juice’ to links verified through it’s own g+ system in the future. Now, the challenge is how to attract those precious verified author links to your site? …stay tuned!

Spinning text is a way to leverage the power of synonyms to provide unique content. ‘Spintax’ is written like this:

Unique content is important for SEO.

This sentence can be expressed many different ways by writing it like this:

{Unique|Distinctive|One of a kind} {content|information|material} {is|is definitely|is undoubtedly} {important|essential|crucial|critical} for {SEO|Search engine optimization|Search engine marketing}

When posted, one word from within each curly bracket is chosen at random to create a sentence which is unique in the eyes of Google.

For example, the above sentence will look like the following to the SE’s:

Unique content is definitely crucial for SEO

One of a kind material is definitely critical for Search engine marketing

Distinctive information is undoubtedly crucial for Search engine marketing

One of a kind material is essential for Search engine optimization

One of a kind content is undoubtedly crucial for Search engine optimization

Distinctive material is essential for Search engine marketing

Unique content is critical for SEO

Distinctive information is undoubtedly important for SEO

The permutations become endless when each paragraph, sentence and word is spun. Each Rank Rocket Monthly SEO package requires one 500+ word super spun article, a super spun title, and a super spun description.

This allows all backlinks to your site to be not just related to your area of business, but also peppered with your keywords and branding.

As a small business owner you will inevitably get a call from a Yellow Pages online sales person, just as I did. Just as many of my clients have. I wanted to be able to offer my clients sound advice as to the efficacy of the Yellow Pages online listing, so I bought a package for my freelance web design business, Box 9 Design.

Here’s the pitch I got from Yellow Pages.

For just $100 per month, my branded ad would appear at the top of the listings for anyone searching for a web designer in Victoria BC. They promised thousands of ‘impressions’ per month, and dozens of ‘clicks’ per week. I was told that buying an ad on Yellow Pages.ca would boost my Google ranking and flood my site with targeted traffic to my website. Moreover, the salesperson told me that the traffic they sent to my website was premium traffic, people ready to buy my services.

Yellow Pages sent me a report at the end of each month which seemed to show that those promises were indeed coming true! Hundreds and even a thousand plus ‘impressions’ and dozens of ‘clicks’ on my ad.

So why then did my expensive, professional, traffic monitoring software (far more detailed than Google Analytics) show a visit from Yellow Pages.ca no more than 2 or three times per month?

I was to find this out some months later when a poor, hapless Yellow Pages salesperson called to renew my ad. I had a great time playing with this poor employee. I was calm and respectful the whole time, but he likely had never tried to use his script on someone as well informed and well prepared as me! I held his feet to the fire and wouldn’t let go until I got some unfiltered truth out of him.

Right off the bat, the original salesperson had not been ‘accurate’ when telling me that my Yellow Pages ad would help my Google ranking. It would not said current salesperson. (Yeah, I know).

My Yellow Pages ad would not increase traffic to my website, said new salesguy. Just like the physical phonebook, he reports, an online Yellow Pages ad is meant to generate sales calls. On the Phone. Or visits to my physical location (which I don’t have). Wait a minute…WHAT?

I asked what all this talk about ‘clicks’ was. Oh, said sales dude, we count any click on your ad, which brings up more information about you. There is a small link to my website, but it is not a direct or follow-able link, which makes it useless for SEO strategies.

By the way, I keep very close tabs on how my clients find me, and I have never had a single phone call or enquiry generated by my $1,200 Yellow Pages ad.

I relate this story to you as a sort of public service. Albeit a self-serving public service. You could give your hundred bucks a month to Yellow Pages and get nothing in return, or use it to get your website up in the top three position on Google where it will actually bring you sales.

Rule #1 JUST DO IT!

It really doesn’t matter what you blog. Just keep it related to the key terms you’re trying to rank for, and include one or two key terms within the body of your post. Don’t go too short, and it’s not necessary to make it really long. A 150-200 word quick write-up like the one you’re reading now will help you rank well for whatever terms you’d like. For instance, I’d like to be the number one result for SEO Victoria or SEO Victoria BC. Find a way to work the key terms in verbatim without extra characters or punctuation.

The key now is to get ‘backlinks’ from all over the internet. Even most newbies have heard the term backlinks, but the nature of this process has really been changing over the past few months.

Not so long ago, website owners were engaged in the arduous process of sourcing links from other websites, best of all the home page, and often exchanging links for one on their own site. Getting ‘traditional’ links still works, but not without the newer component which is the social media aspect of backlinks.

Google has given a far greater role to the blogosphere in ranking which sites are ‘authorities’ in any given search area. The good news is that you can take advantage of my network of social media users and links to link back to your content. The bad news is that not only do you have to run your business, but now you have to generate blog posts on a regular basis.

Or do you? Why not have me create the content for you too? Many small business owners are hesitant to hand over the creation of content for their website. Most feel that they’ll ‘get around to it’ and that once they finish these next 4 or 5 projects they’ll start blogging. Guess what? They almost never do!

At a certain point in our process, it becomes necessary to have a new blog entry every day for two weeks. We inundate the blogosphere with links back to all of this new content and that’s when the real gains are realized.

A few months ago when I did this with the Pinetree Furniture site, it shot them to the #1 search position for over a dozen search terms and they have stayed there, rock solid ever since with no additional blogging or backlinking.

In a future post, I’ll discuss your options for content creation for your blog and how The Rank Rocket, SEO Victoria can take care of things for a lot less money than you might think.
